Keeping children safer online

As parents, we do everything we can to keep our children safe. We hold their hand crossing the road. We teach them not to talk to strangers. We do our best every day. But when it comes to online safety, it can be hard to know where to start. The good news is, the steps you can take to keep your child safe online are the same as the ones you use to protect them offline.

The internet is a great way for children to stay in touch with their friends and have fun. From watching and sharing videos to playing games, messaging to social media, children and young people are now online more than ever. It’s also become an important part of school work and learning. But unfortunately there are risks – from discovering inappropriate content to being contacted by strangers or people they only know online, or even running up credit card bills for you.

Whether your child is taking their first steps into the online world or using it quite a lot, talking to them about navigating the internet safely is one of the most important things you can do to help keep them safer. The more you connect and communicate with them, the more likely they are to understand your concerns. And the more likely they are to come to you if they feel like something isn’t right. Part of those conversations should be about agreeing the rules and boundaries together, so they feel involved and understand that everything you’re doing is to keep them safe.
